Go up the stairs and the line runs along the wall above the archway, in the same lettering as the sign outside. Everybody tries to photograph it. Almost nobody gets it straight.
Short version: “Bend a bit. The dosa is worth it.” sits high on a curved wall above an arch, so you have to physically bend or step back to fit it in frame — which is precisely what it tells you to do. It is a small joke about effort being worth it, and it works on both the room and the dosa.
Why it’s so hard to shoot
Three reasons, all of them deliberate-ish:
- It’s high. Above the arch, near the beams, so your camera tilts and the letters lean.
- It’s long. To fit the whole sentence you have to back up into the stairwell, which is not a generous space.
- It curves. The wall turns as the line runs, so part of it is always at a slight angle to you.
The fix is to stand at the top of the stairs, hold the phone lower than feels right, and — yes — bend a bit.
What it’s actually about
A benne dosa takes as long as it takes. It’s cooked one at a time on a tawa, slower than a thin dosa because the point is a crisp base and a soft middle. You cannot hurry it, and we’d rather not try.
So the line is a small apology and a small promise at once: there is a wait, and the dosa is worth it. Put another way: yes, there’s a wait, and yes, it’s worth it. Written in a way that makes you work slightly to read it, which felt right.
The room it belongs to
Upstairs is the quieter half of the cafe — cane-backed chairs, wooden tables, the noise of the counter dropping away below. It’s where people sit when they’re staying a while, rather than grabbing a kaapi and heading off.
If you’re here with a group, upstairs is where you want to be. If you want ten minutes and a strong coffee, stay downstairs near the counter.
