Twenty-five minutes. One of them is walking here, three are walking back, and you’d like to eat something that isn’t from a vending machine. It’s doable, but the order matters.
Short version: for breakfast near Symbiosis, Viman Nagar, order the coffee and the food at the same time, pick something steamed rather than griddled, and eat at the counter. Podi idli and a filter kaapi will have you fed and out in under fifteen minutes. A dosa is a lunch-hour decision, not a between-classes one.
The timing, honestly
| Minutes | What’s happening |
|---|---|
| 0–3 | Walking over from campus |
| 3–4 | Ordering — coffee and food together, not one then the other |
| 4–8 | Steamed things arrive first |
| 8–18 | Actually eating, sitting down, like a person |
| 18–22 | Coffee, standing, because it’s small and strong |
| 22–25 | Back, unbothered |
Order steamed, not griddled
Breakfast near Symbiosis comes down to what is already cooked. Idli is steamed in trays and waiting. A dosa is made one at a time, on a tawa, in the order it was asked for. There is no version of a dosa that is faster than the queue in front of it — and you would not want a rushed one anyway.
So: podi idli if you want it dry and quick, idli sambar if you want it hot and spoonable, vada if you want something fried that is already fried. Save the benne dosa for a gap of an hour or more.

The coffee is the point, let’s be honest
Filter kaapi comes small and strong, which is exactly right when you have four minutes. It isn’t a drink to hold for an hour — it’s a reset, taken standing near the counter, like the tiffin rooms in Bengaluru where this whole idea comes from.
Get the stamp card while you’re at it. Nine coffees, tenth one free, and at the rate of an ordinary exam week you’ll be there before the month ends.
What to do with a longer gap
- 45 minutes: benne masala dosa, filter kaapi, sit upstairs.
- An hour, with friends: a dosa, a thatte idli and a couple of vadas across the table — everyone tries everything.
- A gap you shouldn’t have: kaapi softy. Blame us.

Frequently asked questions
Where can students eat near Symbiosis Law School, Viman Nagar?
Benne & Brew is on Symbiosis Law School Road itself — Shop 21 & 22, Shubh Nirvana, opposite 10 Biz Park. It is a pure vegetarian South Indian tiffin kitchen, close enough to walk to between classes.
What is the quickest South Indian breakfast?
Podi idli or idli sambar. Both are steamed in advance and finished to order, so they arrive faster than anything cooked individually on a tawa. A dosa takes as long as a dosa takes.
Is there a loyalty card?
Yes. Ask at the counter: nine stamps, one per coffee, and the tenth cup is free. It is designed for people who turn up several times a week, which is most of the student crowd.
